| Virtual Practice for Specialists |
|
Virtual Practice lends itself particularly well to Specialist Practice. Generally, specialists work at multiple locations which creates a problem in terms of the availability of patient notes and information. Virtual Practice solves this problem by utilising a central database for storage of relevant patient information that is accessible through the internet from any location. Imagine the situation of a surgeon who sees a private patient in his rooms: the surgeon takes the history and makes an examination and sees the patient is suitable for surgery; then emails the anaesthetist who can look at the patient's history prior to operation and may, indeed, order some special tests; the anaesthetist may also look at the tests which the surgeon has ordered; if it is not necessary for the anaesthetist to see the patient prior to surgery they can order their pre-med. On admission to the hospital, the nurses can read the surgeon's notes and routine pre-operative notes, amongst which he can have standard admission orders. After operation he can put the operation note directly in the record and print a copy for the hospital if that is appropriate. At the same time he can put the item number for the operation in a bill and his secretary will get a note on her desktop advising her of the surgery and she can take care of the accounts. Post-operatively if the routine medications prescribed are insufficient, the surgeon can log on and prescribe additional medication and view the actual physical and vital signs pertaining to the patient. Photographs can even be included as can intra-operative x-rays. Pathology results are automatically added to the record via web services. At the post operative review in the rooms the surgeon can quickly review all the record and refresh his mind. No information is ever entered twice. If there are complications, a physician can look at the record prior to his visit to the patient and save time having much of the information already before visiting the patient. The patient does not have to repeat the same history over and over but the doctor can zero in on particular areas of interest and update. The arguments for Virtual Practice are overwhelming.
